The South Hill Experiment - “Snake at the Alter”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Air, SAULT, Animal Collective

Trip-hop grooves underpin The South Hill Experiment’s twin 2023 records SUNSTRIKES and MOONSHOTS, funky basslines and shimmering synths anchoring the LA-based duo’s sound. The South Hill Experiment (S/H/E) is Goldwash and Baird, two artists with their own listener bases, but this music shows clear roots to their funk/jazz and indie rock influences respectively. Generally, SUNSTRIKES is the more, well, sunny of the two while MOONSHOTS does give off post-midnight vibes, it’s not to the point that these are abstractly different directions given the gravity of S/H/E’s smooth, psych-soul foundation. While pulling in fresh sounds, S/H/E’s music is tender and patient even in their heaviest moments. It’s a wide-ranging listen that sounds committed across these expansive releases and hopefully their live show jams these dreamy rock frames even more. The South Hill Experiment showcase Wednesday night at Mohawk’s small indoor stage for Future Classic. (Kevin McStravick)
